Phil Southall of Port Talbot took charge of the Welsh Cup Final on Sunday 4th May at Newtown. The 47-year old had not taken charge of the prestigious event before, but has been refereeing in the Top Flight for a number of years and has a wealth of experience.

Southall began refereeing in the Port Talbot League in 1974, aged 14. He progressed to the Welsh League list in 1979 and the Football Combination and Football Conference leagues in 1985. He has been involved in the Welsh Premier League since its inaugural season in 1992.

 

His career highlights include the UEFA Cup tie between Belshina and CSKA Sofia in 2002 and the Barcelona v Parma friendly at the Millennium Stadium in 2004. He also represented Wales at the Semi-Pro Tournament in Aberdeen where he took charge of the Scotland v Rep. Of Ireland and England v Rep of Ireland matches. He has also officiated in the Wales Under 19 match against Ukraine in 2005 and the Wales Under 21 match against Norway in 2004.

Phil currently owns a greeting card shop in Bridgend, he is the Chairman of the Port Talbot and District Referees Society and is actively involved in the training and coaching of 'up and coming' referees in the area. Besides from these, his hobbies include all Sport in general. He is married to Helen and they have two daughters, Kimberley, 15 and Lauren, 13.

Kevin Morgan of Cardiff and John Swindley of Wrexham were the two Assistants, whilst Darren Adie of Caldicot was the 4th Official.
